Housing Studio Barcelona

The unique site for this housing project negotiates the edge between Barcelona's dense Gracia neighborhood to the west and the expansive L'Eixample to the east. A small park to the NW is the impetus for a pubic space of similar scale and proportion and a break in the building mass which allows for pedestrian traffic through the site.

The Ever - Expanding Interior (UIC Au 2010)

URBAN VISION

The Ever Expanding Interior is a network of spaces that form continuous passageways through the city. Designed both as circulation and to contain program, it is evocative of Koolhaas’ notion of Junkspace; but also looks towards the Parisian galleries of the 19th century as a historical precedent. The Interior has a parasitic relationship with the existing urban fabric and as it advances it performs two primary actions...

EROSION

Creates points of entry into the Ever-Expanding Interior.
Creates public balcony and terrace spaces.
Blurs the separation of public and private

EXTRUSION

Advances the domain of the Ever-Expanding Interior.
Creates bridge connections to neighboring buildings.

Franklinton Community Housing

Drawing on my urban fabric research I sought to develop a plan for the riverfront Vet's Memorial site in Franklinton. The goal of the project is to design an architecture that celebrates the riverfront and views of downtown, while creating ample public space for recreation and urban farming.

Hot Wire Foam Cutter

Here is a hot wire foam cutter that I recently built. Most of the stuff like the wire, MDF, 1 X 2s, 1/4 -20 all thread, nuts and washers I had in the garage from previous projects. I spent about $40 on the dimmer switch, 120v - 12v (3amp) transformer, clamps, and aluminum angle. The cord was salvaged from an old hot glue gun.

It works really well, though it does take some technique; slow steady movement and dialing in the right temp. Templates or fences are necessary for straight cuts. The switch is on/off and the dimmer controls voltage thus temperature. I might add an LED as a visual indication that it is on and/or a momentary foot switch for additional safety.

The Riparian Corridor

The site in Cleveland Ohio is situated on the edge of Rockefeller Park and the Doan Brook. It can be seen as a missing piece in the riparian corridor stretching from the edge of Case Western reserve Univerity campus all the way to Lake Erie. My building scheme would allow for the site to be largley planted with trees and naturally occouring plants, adding to this protective barrier along the Doan Brook.

A riparian corridor is a unique plant community consisting of the vegetation growing near a river, stream, lake, lagoon or other natural body of water.

An Architecture With Portals

Located in Jinbocho, Tokyo’s book district, this bookstore/sushi & saki bar explores an architectural dynamism that creates connections to other local buildings with different programs. Three nearby fighting halls become very crowded during special events. The D-units provide an escape from the chaos caring passengers over the crowded streets, directly through the portals into an environment of relaxation and tranquility.

This studio centered on the anime series of the same name in which three sisters fight evil with the power to manipulate, animate, and control paper. The project was to design a device for one of the characters to use while visiting Jinbocho, the book district of Tokyo. Maggie is a bibliophile and a recluse, who likes to read in very small spaces despite her large size. My device is a cape jacket that can transform into a small tent for Maggie to read in, or a backpack for caring the books she purchases in Jinbocho.

Architecture Garden

This project with Jrgang Chi, Jon Blistan, and others is a wood-shop for the school of architecture at Tamkang University (Taipei) where Jrgang is teaching this year. If all goes according to plan, a final version will be constructed next spring. Since the site is very small, our goal was to design a dynamic architecture that can operate under four conditions; WORK, THINK, LEARN, PLAY (thinking in verbs).

WORK: the "normal" wood-shop condition.

THINK: down time, break, sitting, reading, relaxing

LEARN: review time, students present their work, listen to others presenting, Professors critiqe

PLAY: party time, festival, end of the semester

Gothic Bullfight

This is a group project from Spring 2008 with instructor Gabriel Esquivel. The initial criteria was to create an installation celebrating light. In addition, Prof. Esquivel encouraged us to investigate the idea of creating an emotional surface. This approach departs from the traditional architecture of thinking and process to an architecture of feeling. We began our research by looking at the gothic rose window for lighting effects and geometry, and the candle lit interior of the gothic church. We moved to incorporate the bullfight for ideas about color, motion, spectacle, ritual, and emotion.

LITE WALL

For this project, we were given a mix of different programs, including a community center, library and retail/commercial space. In this studio with Prof. Jrgang Chi, we were asked to also incorporate some dynamic element that was also low-fi, meaning its function was not dependent on technology. My solution was a balloon wall, which could be filled with a buoyant gas. The walls can be rearranged to reprogram the open spaces, create connections between spaces, adjust lighting conditions, and even brought outside of the structure to enclose outside spaces, or to act as signage for the various activities within.

VOLUME INTERACTIVE

DESCRIPTION: The initial criteria for this project was to design a library for architectural scholars using wood as the celebrated material. Drawing inspiration from interviews with actual librarians, my aim was to create an open interior that would foster interpersonal connections throughout he space. The bookcases and study carrells are placed in the pockets between the deep wood columns, creating a grand atrium in the center space. The wood siding creates a rhythmic pattern on the exterior that corresponds with the bookcases on the interior. The concrete base is cast from wood forms built from the same wood as the siding. The impression of this wood remains; concrete is the ghost of wood construction.

Our objective was to design a structure interpreting the notion of floor and ceiling in wood light frame construction. Our proposal was a chair that not only rocks but rolls as well. In addition to being a functional piece of furniture, its construction is representational of a method for curvilinear roof and floor construction at a larger scale.

Concrete reading room.

The aim of this project was to design a small isolated structure to serve as a reading room and storage for books, with a focus on materiality and lighting conditions. Working with concrete, I cast this model (1/2"=1') using wood formwork in which I etched the representational form lines and used finish nails to create the look of tie back holes. The cast stair also serves as the book shelves.
